Looking for the perfect gift for the traveler in your life? This easy guide shares my tried-and-true travel gift recommendations to inspire your shopping!
When buying a gift for the traveler in your life, (or yourself), many people have no idea what to get. Do they need it? Will they use it?
If you're shopping for someone else, remember, it’s the thought that counts. But let’s make sure you get that thought just right!
Through the years I have tried to optimize “my things” in general. Whether it’s been downsizing my belongings or streamlining my packing, I’ve done my fair share of experimenting to find what works
Back in the day, airlines used to allow 33-kilo (65 lb) bags. Now it’s down to 23 kilos (50 lbs). While I still take full advantage of that space, I’ve learned the importance of packing items that I’ll actually use and that help make my trip run smoother.
If you have someone in your life who loves to travel and you’re never quite sure what to get them, you’re in luck. Here are some of the items I use all the time, and they might just be the perfect gift idea for the traveler in your life, too!
Coffee Lovers
Aeropress
What it is: While most people, travelers or not, love coffee, this is ESSENTIAL! The Aeropress is a super portable coffee maker that’s a total game-changer for coffee lovers. Your coffee is delicious with the Areopress.
Why I love it: This is my go-to coffee maker when I’m on the road. I like knowing I can have coffee every morning without relying on where I’m staying to have a coffee maker.
It’s compact and designed for travel, and it comes with a bag. It’s also simple to use, as you just need coffee, boiling water, and a mug or thermos.
Easy To Use:
- Rinse the paper filter with hot water and secure it onto the Aeropress.
- Add ground coffee (medium or slightly finer works best).
- Pour in hot water, stir, and press.
- Enjoy your fresh, delicious coffee!
Coffee Thermos
What it is: This is a handy thermos or insulated cup that keeps your drinks hot or cold for hours. Whether it’s coffee, tea, or just water, it’s a lifesaver on the go.
Why I love it: It is amazing how much money you can save by making your own coffee in the morning. We all know that. But is also true that hanging out at a cool coffee shop for a few hours is great too!
But my coffee thermos or insulated cups I use for any hot drinks, so my coffee or tea, or even hot or cold water. It just makes my life easier and there is one less thing I am searching for when I am on the go. Something to note, if this is for you or a gift for someone else, DO NOT get the biggest thermos out there! It is not necessary and it weighs more and can be bulkier than others, and it is definitely a cultural thing to have huge everythings!
Exercise
Yoga Mat
What it is: A lightweight, rollable yoga mat that’s easy to pack and perfect for working out anywhere.
Why I love it: When I can’t go for a walk, jog, or find a gym, this yoga mat saves the day. It doesn’t take up much space and lets me stay active in small hotel rooms or tight Airbnb spaces. It is best to maintain your workout routine, even on the road!
Exercise Bands
What it is: Compact resistance bands that come with a travel pouch. They’re great for quick workouts and stretches in small spaces.
Why I love it: The bands come in a small bag so I take them everywhere. With the combo of the yoga mat above, I am set! There are so many videos on Youtube of workouts that you will be able to keep in shape while on the road. Learning to adapt and making the most out of the space you have available is key.
Wellness
Under-eye Patches
What it is: Hydrating under-eye patches that reduce puffiness and dark circles. Perfect for self-care after a long travel day.
Why I love it: Since I am a light sleeper (as you read above), sometimes it shows! Self-care is necessary and not just a luxury. It is important to continue your skin routine and all that keeps you healthy and feeling good about yourself!
Portable Massager
What it is: A portable massager to help ease the aches and pains that come with long flights, heavy bags, or just walking more than usual.
Why I love it: There can be a lot of stress on the body when traveling. From a long flight, to carry a heavy bag, to walking more than you are used to, to a change in environment. Instead of letting the pain get to me, I can use this massager to get ahead of the game. In the end, I have problems if I have pain to do certain things which would inhibit me from doing something so it is best to take care of yourself!
Compression socks
What it is: Socks designed to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and keep your legs comfortable during long flights or busy days.
Why I love it: Compression socks are not just for older people. For long flights and a day of lots of walking, compression socks can be something you might want to look into. I do feel a difference when I wear them.
Sunscreen
What it is: Isdin is a liquid sunscreen that protects your skin from harmful UV rays.
Why I love it: Take it from someone who didn’t use enough of it as a young adult, I cannot stress how much I regret that. But now I love Isdin as it is a lightweight liquid consistency than thick and creamy, exactly why I could never find a sunscreen I liked.
Sleep Essentials
Earplugs
What it is: Comfortable earplugs designed to block out noise so you can get a good night’s sleep anywhere.
Why I love it: I am a light sleeper. Getting rest in a new environment can be challenging for me as I hear every dog that barks, all the music in the neighborhood, sirens, and cars beeping. I also need earplugs that are comfortable to sleep with as I don't want to wake up with an earache in the morning. These work just for that!
White Noise Machine
What it is: A white noise machine is a small device that produces soothing sounds to help drown out noise and create a calm sleep environment.
Why I love it: There are apps on your phone that you can listen too also, but for me I like this as it is really small and perfect to have next to me while I sleep. I use this nightly.
Sleep Patches
What it is: Adhesive patches designed to help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
Why I love it: Everybody needs sleep and to be rested so stay healthy and ready to meet the day with vigor! So, my problem of being a light sleeper, for any reason, is problematic. I have friends who can sleep anytime they want, on a bus, on a plane, on a couch in the middle of watching a movie, anywhere. Jealous! But these patches help me. I don’t use them every night, as I try other methods also. But when I need a good night’s sleep, I use the patches. Check with your doctor if it is okay for you.
For Packing and Organization
Packing Cubes
What it is: Packing cubes are lightweight, zippered pouches that help you organize your luggage. They come in various sizes and make packing and finding what you packed, simple.
Why I love it: Packing cubes have completely changed the way I pack. They keep everything organized, shirts in one, socks in another, and toiletries separate. It’s amazing how much space you can save, and when you’re living out of a suitcase, being able to grab exactly what you need without digging around is worth it.
Digital Hand Scale
What it is: A small, portable scale to weigh your luggage and avoid those annoying airline fees for overweight bags.
Why I love it: This is an absolute must! Since I usually travel with just one bag, I’m always trying to downsize and maximize every ounce. Also, since the scale is so small, it is always with my suitcase, like an extension!
Cable organizer
What it is: A compact pouch with compartments to neatly store your cords, chargers, and other small tech essentials.
Why I love it: I seem to have cables everywhere so this bag helps me keep it organized. Now, everything is neatly stored in one spot. It’s a simple, effective solution for staying organized, and it’s made packing and unpacking so much easier.
Travel Essentials
Shower Shoes
What it is: Lightweight, quick-drying shoes to protect your feet in shared showers.
Why I love it: Keeping your feet healthy is a must and as you travel often, you will be in many showers. It is good to know you are protected in a way with shower shoes. I always use them when I travel.
Travel Towel
What it is: A lightweight, quick-drying towel perfect for travel.
Why I love it: Travel towels are not bulky and many places that you stay at could only give you one towel. I like the luxury of my own towel, even as an extra one just in case. It’s one of those items you don’t realize how much you’ll use until you have it. Also, these travel towels dry really quickly.
Crossover Bag
What it is: A secure, crossbody bag designed to keep your essentials safe and close to you which is great for travel and crowded places.
Why I love it: I have lived in places where pick-pocketers are active so I like to have a bag that is hard to get off me, and that I can wear at times under my one arm. It now is natural for me. I get nervous when my sister goes to the grocery store in the USA and has her purse in the grocery cart! Anyway, this bag gives me some security as I can wear it with the opening more in front of my body. When walking in places where there are many people, the last thing you want is for people to have easy access to the zipper on your bag. Most likely someone can unzip it without you even feeling it. This prevents the unwanted situations.
Travel Umbrella
What it is: A compact, lightweight umbrella that’s durable and easy to pack for those unexpected rainy days.
Why I love it: When it rains, staying dry makes all the difference. There’s nothing worse than being soaked, especially if your bag gets wet too. A good umbrella is an absolute must for any traveler. Watching unprepared tourists dripping wet has made me extra thankful I always pack mine!
Travel Money Belt
What it is: A discreet belt with hidden compartments to securely carry your cash, cards, and important documents.
Why I love it: Extra protection is not a bad thing. I like travel belts as I feel my valuable documents, money, credit cards, and passport are less exposed and less accessible to others. Thieves are professional so best not to make yourself a target.
Steamer
What it is: A compact steamer that’s perfect for getting rid of wrinkles when an iron isn’t available.
Why I love it: Depending on the trip you are taking, this could be a huge advantage to have. I often need to look professional and the worst impression is walking around with wrinkled clothes. This steamer is easy to use and great when I am in places where there isn’t an iron.
Travel Mirror
What it is: A compact mirror with regular and magnified sides, perfect for travel.
Why I love it: Not every place I stay has a mirror (or a good one), so this solves that problem. It’s small, lightweight, and always handy.
Electronics
Power Strip
What it is: A compact power strip that lets you charge multiple devices at once, even in places with limited outlets.
Why I love it: Okay, with all the technical advancements in the world, one thing that has not kept up to speed is the amount of outlets that hotel or room has! This is really frustrating when you need to organize your charging. I am sure you have all been there. There is your computer, your phone, a power bank, and your watch just to start! If you are out for the day and have the night to charge everything, sometimes it is not so easy. Especially if you are sharing a space with others who have the same needs. This power strip has been a game-changer for me. Ah, the simple things in life…
Battery Pack
What it is: A portable charger to keep your devices powered up when you’re on the go.
Why I love it: Depending on how much I use my phone, I always have my battery pack charged and with me. This is an absolute must when you are out and about all day. When your phone dies and you don’t have anything to charge it, it can be very inconvenient.
Neck Light
What it is: A lightweight light that hangs around your neck, perfect for reading or navigating in the dark.
Why I love it: Being able to read without all the lights on, or do simple activities before you head to bed, can lead to a more restful sleep. It just makes things easier at times.
Selfie Stick
What it is: A super light and compact selfie stick that’s easy to carry. It’s perfect for taking photos or videos without drawing too much attention.
Why I love it: Through my travels there are times I want to take a picture or video and since this seflie stick is so light, I feel I am a little bit more discreet with it so it doesn’t draw to much attention. Some places it is not recommended to have your phone out as someone could snatch it, so always be aware of your surroundings.
Everyday Use
Laynard
What it is: A laynard is a simple, convenient way to keep your phone handy and secure while you travel.
Why I love it: Sometimes we need four hands as we juggle all that we are trying to carry. In the middle of that, we could set our phone somewhere and forget it. This lanyard makes sure our phone is with us and it is one less thing for us to worry about in the moment.
Water Bottle
What it is: A reusable water bottle that’s durable, lightweight, and perfect for staying hydrated on the go.
Why I love it: If you are taking a thermos that you can also use for water, then having a both might not be necessary for you. Most times you may not be drinking the tap water so either you will be boiling water or buying it or using some sort of filter. However you do it, DRINK LOTS OF WATER!
Journal
What it is: A stylish, travel-friendly journal for jotting down memories, plans, or anything that inspires you.
Why I love it: Many people who travel don’t want a huge, bulky journal. But something beautiful or cool looking, that brings them motivation, and is a good size, not too big or not too small, is great for jotting things down in. There are many places maybe you would rather write about on paper and not in your phone. It all comes down to personal preference, but physical journals are a great way to go!
Gifts and Connection
Video Frame
What it is: A portable digital frame to display photos or videos, perfect for staying connected to loved ones.
Why I love it: I wish these existed many, many years ago. I would have loved for people to see my photos of my travels years back then. But this is one of the best gift you can give to loved ones while their favorite person is traveling, you feel more connected and can get a better glimpse of all that they are doing and seeing.
